Introduction

This is Peter Costello's representative work, the Snap Chair. This innovative folding chair from Tasmania, Australia, was created around 1993. It is a design chair with a beautiful curved structure, achieved by bending plywood and applying tension, using stainless steel wire and hinges to create a lightweight yet highly strong chair. When unfolding from a folded state, the structure instantly receives tension and locks into place, making a snap sound, hence the name Snap Chair. It garnered attention at design exhibitions and international furniture fairs and is a rare chair, with only about 500 units produced in the 1990s. I purchased it over 20 years ago as a used piece of furniture in relatively good condition. After purchasing it, I occasionally used it to sit on when putting on shoes at the entrance, as the seat height of approximately 47 cm is a bit high. As this item was manufactured about 30 years ago and has been used, there are signs of wear such as peeling of the clear coat (photo 19) and scratches (photo 20; there are scratches like this in various places, but since the chair has a natural clear coat, they are not extremely noticeable). Structurally, the plywood is highly strong and rigid, and the screws and bolts fit well into the joints of the metal hinges, hardware, and the resin parts that hook the wire to the plywood, making it very sturdy with no wobbling or looseness. To assemble, hold the ends of the seat and back, bring your hands together as if closing it, and then apply a little force at the end to make it snap (photo 11 shows the image just before it snaps) to complete the chair. To fold it, press the knobs (hooks) on both sides while applying force with your fingers outwards to release the hooks and fold it (photos 15-17 show the chair in a folded state; the plywood is curved, so it has some thickness).
It is an old but somewhat mechanical and very rare chair. Would anyone interested like it?
